![]() In the first folder they have to original name from the digital camera, e.g. I compare 2 folders with identical files but they are renamed in the second folder. One question, about a compare mode which I haven't found yet. I'm using it to clean up old directories etc. It's really a very useful piece of software. Both the “volume and sensitivity” of information the government can purchase has exploded in recent years due to “location-tracking and other features of smartphones,” and the “advertising-based monetization model” that underlies much of the internet, the report says.Thank you for providing WinMerge. “Today, in a way that far fewer Americans seem to understand, and even fewer of them can avoid, includes information on nearly everyone,” it says. These are legal hurdles that no longer bother an increasing number of government agencies.Īccess to the most sensitive information about a person was once usually obtained in the course of a “targeted” and “predicated” investigation, the report says. This idea imagines a cop whose ability to surveil them, turn their phone into a tracking device, or start squeezing records out of businesses they frequent, are all gated behind evidentiary thresholds, like reasonable doubt and probable cause. ![]() Most Americans have at least some idea of how a law enforcement investigation unfolds (if only from watching years of police procedurals). Such data may be useful, it says, to “identify every person who attended a protest or rally based on their smartphone location or ad-tracking records.” Such civil liberties concerns are prime examples of how “large quantities of nominally ‘public’ information can result in sensitive aggregations.” What's more, information collected for one purpose “may be reused for other purposes,” which may “raise risks beyond those originally calculated,” an effect called “mission creep.” It is no secret, the report adds, that it is often trivial “to deanonymize and identify individuals” from data that was packaged as ethically fine for commercial use because it had been “anonymized” first. But because companies are willing to sell the information-not only to the US government but to other companies as well-the government considers it “publicly available” and therefore asserts that it “can purchase it.” Were the government to simply demand access to a device's location instead, it would be considered a Fourth Amendment “search” and would require a judge's sign-off. ![]() Perhaps most controversially, the report states that the government believes it can “persistently” track the phones of “millions of Americans” without a warrant, so long as it pays for the information. ![]() The advisers decry existing policies that automatically conflate being able to buy information with it being considered “public.” The information being commercially sold about Americans today is “more revealing, available on more people (in bulk), less possible to avoid, and less well understood” than that which is traditionally thought of as being “publicly available.” The ODNI's own panel of advisers makes clear that the government’s static interpretations of what constitutes “publicly available information” poses a significant threat to the public. ![]() “Congress must tackle the government’s data broker pipeline this year, before it considers any reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,” he said (referring to the ongoing political fight over the so-called “ crown jewel” of US surveillance). “This report makes it clear that the government continues to think it can buy its way out of constitutional protections using taxpayers’ own money," says Chris Baumohl, a law fellow at EPIC. ![]() ![]() ![]() Again, chemicals like this one "have been linked to cell death," Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert at Maple Holistics, tells Bustle. Here are a few flavors vapers might want to avoid, until we have more information. And that's why you should never assume any of them are "safe." Experts do say, however that certain flavors may be riskier than others due to the chemicals that go into making them, and how they reacted when heated up and inhaled. ![]() ![]() The problem with vaping liquid, of any flavor, is you can never be 100 percent sure what you're inhaling. And, of course, there are completely bizarre flavors, too, with names that seem to come from another planet. There are common flavors like tobacco, strawberry, cola, and cherry, as well as more interesting flavors like cereal and buttered popcorn. But whatever your reason for vaping may be, it's still important to weigh the pros and cons, and learn more about certain flavors so you can make a slightly more informed decision.īecause, if you've ever been to a vape store in search of e-cigarette juice, then you already know the choices are pretty much endless. And that can frustrating, especially since so many people use vaping as a potentially healthier alternative to cigarette smoking.įor others, vaping is just a hobby, and one that comes with a variety of flavors to try. So it can be tough for e-cig enthusiasts to know just how much damage, if any, they might be doing to their health. Researchers are still in the early stages of figuring out the potential health hazards associated with certain vaping flavors - as well as the dangers of vaping in general. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is how audio travels from sound source, through the computer, and out of the speakers. In most cases, audio latency is caused by a lack of computing resources which bogs down the ability of your computer/laptop to handle audio processing correctly. If you’ve ever loaded up a soft synth VST, played a note, and heard the note playback a fraction of a second later, that’s latency. It kills a musician’s ability to play in time, and is both a musician and a producer’s nightmare.Īnd audio latency doesn’t just happen with recording ‘live’ instruments, either. What Is Audio Latency?Īudio latency, or commonly referred to as lag, is when digital audio playback suffers from unwanted, delayed response time. The company-specific drivers they’ve provided you with are there for a reason, so use them and forget about ASIO4ALL. In fact, it is probably advisable that you don’t use ASIO4ALL if your soundcard has its own drivers. Most audio interfaces come loaded with their own drivers now, and so ASIO4ALL is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Provided your soundcard isn’t an absolute dinosaur (made before 2009), you most probably won’t need ASIO4ALL. Do I Need ASIO4ALL If I Have An Audio Interface? If you’re operating straight from Windows, and without any sound card or audio interface, I highly recommend downloading and installing ASIO4ALL drivers. ![]() This is where the ‘4ALL’ in ASIO4ALL comes into play.ĪSIO4ALL acted as a bridge, a middle-man if you will, from Windows to the audio application itself, but with all the clever delegation features that were implanted in the original ASIO. So, ASIO was great for those of us with pro audio cards that supported ASIO drivers (newer models etc), but what about everyone else? So, ASIO drivers were great and all - but there was one major problem with them: compatibility.Īs with all revolutionary technologies, it takes time for the industry players to catch up to a new ‘standard’, and there were a ton of interfaces out there that just didn’t support ASIO yet. Steinberg essentially offered up a new standard of how external audio and MIDI devices could be handled in Windows, and the audio world rejoiced. Then a few impatient heroes in capes, who went under the name of Steinberg (commonly known as the developers of Cubase), came to a gentleman’s agreement with Windows and offered up a solution known as ASIO.ĪSIO drivers work by re-routing audio processes in the signal path, bypassing the Windows mixer and thus reducing the workload necessary to process tasks. In a word, it was inefficient.Ī few improvements by Windows were made over the years, but nothing very substantial. If you didn’t have your own external soundcard, you were pretty much at the whim of Windows’ laggy audio processing, as the entire signal had to be run through Windows own proprietary mixer, which meant that simple audio processing tasks would get bogged down by all the other processes in the signal path that Windows was already taking care of. Can’t I Just Use My Computer’s Drivers?īy today’s standards, Windows was quite a primitive piece of software. In a way, it’s kind of like how the central nervous system in our body works, connecting our brain to the rest of our organs in order to transmit signals and tell the body what to do.ĪSIO4ALL is that driver. When your manufacturer builds a sound card, there are these clever little mechanisms called drivers, which are responsible for how the audio interface communicates between the application’s software to the hardware device itself. What Is ASIO4ALL?ĪSIO, or short for Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) is described by Wikipedia as a “computer sound card driver protocol for digital audio specified by Steinberg, providing a low- latency and high fidelity interface between a software application and a computer’s sound card.” Why Do I Need ASIO4ALL? Macs use high-quality audio drivers called Core Audio, making ASIO4ALL redundant for Mac users. The short answer is: no, you will not need to install ASIO4ALL if you own a Mac.Įven if you wanted to, you’re not going to find a Mac OS version. With this success, the researchers tested their theory by transplanting the new type of retinal sheet into degenerated rat retinas that lacked almost all photoreceptors. As hoped, the targeted bipolar cells eventually died off, which is what happens when they are not allowed to mature. All the different retinal cell types, particularly the photoreceptors, were present and organized in the correct way. Early on, these retinal sheets developed the same way as those grown from normal stem cells. Then, they grew retinal organoid sheets from these clones. They began with a line of human stem cells and made clones that lacked the ISLET1 gene. The researchers targeted ISLET1, a gene necessary for maturation of bipolar cells that connect to photoreceptors. This allows transplanted photoreceptors to connect better with host bipolar cells. Looking at the bottom right image of each panel, we can see that the new type of retinal sheet lacks bipolar cells. "But it's their very connection to the bipolar cells in the retinal sheet that prevents the photoreceptors from connecting to the bipolar cells in the host." The solution was to engineer retinal sheets that would lose their bipolar cells during the final stages of photoreceptor maturation.Ī view of the retina after transplanting a retinal sheet grown from normal human stem cells (top) or the modified stem cells lacking the ISL1 gene (bottom). "Bipolar cells are inevitably born when the retinal sheet develops properly and photoreceptors mature," says Mandai. But the retinal sheets naturally contain their own bipolar cells. For this regenerative cell therapy to work, the new light receptors in the graft must connect to neurons in the host retina, allowing light from the outside world to be relayed to the brain, which is how we see.īased on their previous studies, the team at RIKEN BDR knew that connecting the grafted sheet to bipolar cells in the host retina is critical. One promising therapy is to replace the part of the retina at the back of the eye with a new retinal sheet, including the photoreceptors, grown from stem cells. Retinitis pigmentosa is a hereditary disease in which photoreceptors in the retina die, leaving people with complete loss of vision or progressive loss in certain spots. The study was published in the scientific journal iScience. Because the retinal sheets were generated from stem cells of human origin, this represents one of the final steps necessary before this technique can be tested in human clinical trials for repairing retinal degeneration. After transplant into damaged mouse retinas, timed removal of certain cells from the grafts allowed better connections to host retinas, which resulted in more responsiveness to light in the damaged eyes. Researchers led by Michiko Mandai at the RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) in Japan have used a genetic modification to improve human-derived retina transplants grown in the lab. recordings were made from the ganglion cells in response to light (red voltage trace). Host bipolar cells connect to host ganglion cells (top gray cells), which send axons to the brain as the optic nerve. Photoreceptors (peach cells at the bottom) in the graft connect to bipolar cells (graft bipolar cells: green host bipolar cells: pink). The result is that all ganglion cells on the right respond to light, and responses are higher than those on the left. On the right, the graft bipolar cells have died off, and the receptors connect to host bipolar cells (pink). On the left, the transplanted photoreceptors (peach cells) are connected to transplanted bipolar cells (green) as part of the retinal sheet. Retinal sheets were grown from wild type human stem cells (left) or human stem cells missing the ISL1 gene (right). The fact that you are exposed to third-party advertising information creates another big question about Betternet security. Another way to research the potential of VPNs infecting your devices with viruses or malware is to check their Antivirus Rankings. When testing Betternet on your device for potential leaks, pay close attention to the messages that come up on your screen. If it is, that means you are not protected or secure. Something to watch out for while using a VPN is if your ISP’s IP address is visible or not. In any event, it appears that Betternet’s mobile apps and extensions are riskier than downloading to Windows. This may be due to the lack of encryption with mobile downloads. The Chrome extension, for example, has been hacked and mobile devices were infected with malware. While your browsing activity is hidden and protected, your other internet searches, views, and overall activity are not completely secure. This is especially true when downloading Betternet extensions to a mobile device. We think the best DSLR for most people today is the Nikon D3500. The good news is that many existing options can now be found at a discounted price. With big name manufacturers phasing out their DSLR divisions, new models are increasingly rare. Our guide spans everything from entry-level options to all-rounders that give learners room to grow. We’ve comprehensively tested the best beginner DSLR options and ranked our favorites in the exhaustive list below. The top entry-level options also benefit from excellent handling and sensors that produce stills to be proud of. While the best beginner mirrorless cameras might promise a more modern shooting experience, DSLRs remain the most affordable route to owning a camera with interchangeable lenses and an optical viewfinder. If you’re just getting into photography, the best beginner DSLR cameras have plenty to offer. The only downside when buying used is that you don't get the kit lens bundles that are often available when buying new, so it's still well worth comparing second-hand deals with the latest offers on new bodies shown in our guide below. The Nikon D3500, for example, is available for only $354 in the US and even mid-range DSLRs like the Nikon D5600 can be found for $464 / £359 (around AU$655) in 'good' condition on MPB. In the US, we recommend the likes of B&H Photo Video, MPB and Adorama, while those in the UK should check out Ffordes, MPB, Wex Photo Video and Park Cameras.
